Join me in opposing President Obama's Cap and Tax plan.

It’s clear the Obama/Pelosi/Reid “solution” for every problem is more bureaucrats, more spending, and more taxes. And they already have their eyes on their next goal—one that would increase your utility bills and raise the price of gasoline.

The Obama "energy plan" will cap CO2 emissions and levy new taxes to be paid by the American people. Proponents of the bill will be careful to not call it “Cap & Trade”, but the name change is nothing but political gamesmanship.

In fact, the goal of this legislation is increased prices. Proponents hope that by increasing the cost of energy, Americans will use less. But as we struggle to overcome an economic crisis, now is not the time for new taxes and government-forced energy inflation.

American families simply cannot afford President Obama’s cap and tax plan. A better way to grow our economy and create jobs would be to increase domestic production of American energy resources.

President Obama and his allies aren’t hiding the fact that they want legislation to increase energy prices. During the 2008 campaign, President Obama said:

Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. …Because I’m capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it — whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.

The President also said, “We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees” at all times.

The President’s senior advisors agree:
  • Treasury Secretary Geithner said, “[increasing] the cost of energy… is necessary if you’re going to change how people use energy.”
  • Office of Management and Budget Director Orszag testified that price increases would encourage people and businesses “to make investments and behavioral changes that reduced CO2 emissions.”
American families simply cannot afford President Obama’s cap and tax plan. A better way to grow our economy and create jobs would be to increase domestic production of American energy resources.

Last week at a town hall meeting with President Obama, a woman named Doris from Lake Wylie, South Carolina stood and asked a simple question.

Given the current economic crisis, “is it a wise decision to add more taxes to us with the health care bill? Because we are over-taxed as it is.”

The answer to that question is NO. It is NOT a wise decision to add more taxes. And yes, we are over-taxed as it is.

But it seems President Obama doesn’t want to answer that simple question. He took 17 minutes to respond, and by all accounts failed to give her a straight answer. The President did tell Doris that, "this is an area where there has been a whole lot of misinformation." Yet it seems the biggest source of "misinformation" is President Obama's attempt to hide from his new tax increase. So let’s take a minute to answer Doris’ question with simple, straightforward facts.

          1) ObamaCare is a massive $569.2 BILLION tax increase.

          2) ObamaCare will raise $60 billion in taxes BEFORE any major “benefits” being in 2014.

President Obama’s health “reform” bill is full of new taxes and tax increases. Among them:

     • Taxes on individuals who can't afford or don't purchase insurance.

     • Excise taxes on existing health insurance plans. This tax will overwhelmingly impact middle-class Americans.

     • Taxes for hiring workers. These taxes will be levied on some companies employing as few as 50 workers.

     • New taxes on investment income. This tax could further slow our economic recovery.

     • New taxes and fees on medical devices—a cost which will be passed on to patients.

     • And more…

How will new taxes effect your family and our economy?

Using unprecedented budget gimmicks, backroom deals and strong-arm tactics the Democrats have passed the Obama/Reid/Pelosi health care “reform” bill on a straight party-line vote in both the Senate and House. The only bipartisan aspect of this bill is the staunch opposition to it.

What this bill will do:

  • Increase taxes on small businesses and families
  • Cut Medicare by more than $520 billion
  • Increase unfunded mandates on states by expanding Medicaid eligibility without paying for it
  • Penalize married couples with higher premiums
  • Tax those who do not purchase insurance acceptable to the government
  • Expand the role of the IRS into enforcing health care mandates
  • Increase the cost of health insurance
  • Increase spending on health care

In spite of bipartisan opposition to the Pelosi/Reid/Obama health care legislation, Democrats in Congress are attempting to pass this ill-considered bill on a partisan basis with only a bare-majority of votes, bypassing the Senate's filibuster rules to jam through legislation that the American public clearly opposes.

This bill will raise taxes, increase the cost of insurance, do nothing to contain health care costs, and will further increase federal spending, the federal budget deficit and our national debt that will burden future generations and hamper economic growth.

Please join with me today to oppose this bill and the use of reconciliation to pass it.

Sincerely,

John Thune

After the earthquake in Haiti, Senator Thune sent a letter to Secretaries Clinton and Napolitano asking that the Departments of State and Homeland Security work jointly to establish a process to grant humanitarian parole, emergency visas, or similar emergency immigration assistance to children whose adoptions have been finalized by the Haitian judicial system. Senator Thune also asked them to work closely with the Haitian government to establish an agreement to allow for the quick dispensation of the judicial requirements for children who have been matched with an adoptive family but whose adoptions have not yet been approved by the Haitian government.

Two days after he sent the letter, the Department of Homeland Security announced that humanitarian parole will be granted to children with pending adoptions who had been previously matched with an American family. Senator Thune's staff is working closely with three families in South Dakota and all will be united with their children soon.

In response to the announcement about humanitarian parole, he also joined 43 other members of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption on a letter to Secretary Clinton underscoring the importance of a comprehensive, coordinated humanitarian parole plan that will allow these children to be evacuated and united with their new families as soon as possible.

Senator Thune also became a cosponsor of the Haiti Assistance Income Tax Incentive (HAITI) Act (S.2936). This bill would allow financial contributions made by U.S. taxpayers to qualifying organizations for Haiti relief efforts through March 1, 2010 to be claimed on their 2009 income tax returns.

I oppose the Democratic Leadership’s health care bill that will result in massive spending, new taxes and higher insurance premiums. Real reform should lower costs without increasing government control of health care.

Congress must get it right when it comes to health care reform. We need lower costs and improved access.

The House bill that passed on Saturday, November 7th by the narrow margin of 220-215, as well as the bill passed by the Democratic majority in the Senate, will instead result in massive spending, new taxes and higher insurance premiums.

The Senate bill, written and negotiated behind closed doors by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, passed the Senate by a vote of 60-39. The House and Senate Democrats are now negotiating this 2,000 + page bill among themselves, and with the White House, in secret. Republicans and the American people deserve to be a part of this process.

Secret, closed door negotiations were not what President Obama promised during the 2008 campaign when he said, “… we’ll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies.”

I’m working to change that. Read my letter to Harry Reid.

MASSIVE SPENDING

According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the Reid bill will cost $2.5 trillion over the first ten years of full implementation.  In its analysis, CBO concluded that “federal outlays for health care would increase during the 2010 – 2019 period, as would the federal budgetary commitment to health care.”

NEW TAXES

Under this bill you will be taxed if:

  • You have insurance
  • You don’t have insurance
  • You’re an employer who can’t afford to provide private health insurance
  • You use medical devices like hearing aids or artificial hearts
  • You take prescription drugs

HIGHER PREMIUMS

The Democrats’ health care bill would increase taxes and fees on drug makers, medical labs, medical device manufacturers and insurers.  According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the Joint Committee on Taxation, two independent sources, those costs will be passed on to consumers and will result in higher insurance premiums, both for those who purchase their own insurance and those who get their insurance through their employer.

I oppose the Democratic Leadership’s health care bill that will result in massive spending, new taxes and higher insurance premiums. I oppose Speaker Pelosi’s bill that provides public funding for abortion. Real reform should lower costs without increasing government control of health care and without providing taxpayer funded abortion coverage.

Pelosi's Health Care Plan Provides Taxpayer Funding of Abortions

Source: GOP Leader Boehner's Website, November 5, 2009

The 2,032-page House Democrats' health care bill will provide for taxpayer funding of abortions, according to GOP Leader John Boehner's office.

"On line 17, p. 110, section 222 under "Abortions for which Public Funding is Allowed" the Health and Human Services Secretary is given the authority to determine when abortion is allowed under the government-run plan. The Speaker's plan also requires that at least one insurance plan offered in the Exchange covers abortions.

What is even more alarming is that a monthly abortion premium will be charged of all enrollees in the government-run plan. It's right there on line 16, page 96, section 213, under "Insurance Rating Rules. The premium will be paid into a U.S. Treasury account - and these federal funds will be used to pay for the abortion services.

Section 213 describes the process in which the Health Benefits Commissioner is to assess the monthly premiums that will be used to pay for elective abortions under the government-run plan. The Commissioner must charge at a minimum $1 per enrollee per month."

Source: GOP Leader Boehner's website, November 5, 2009

Any health care reform bill passed by Congress should NOT contain mandates to provide elective abortion coverage. We should continue current law that prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for elective abortions under the Medicare and Medicaid programs and continue to prohibit federal funding of abortion under the federal employees' health benefits plan.

Joe Lieberman, the Independent Senator from Connecticut who caucuses with Democrats, on Reid’s health care bill). Read more.

EVERY REPUBLICAN IN CONGRESS SUPPORTS REFORM

“Health care costs are too high, and too many Americans lack health insurance. I have said so in just about every one of those 50 speeches … And every other Senate Republican is on record favoring common sense reforms for a system that needs them – ideas such as medical liability reform and equalizing the tax treatment for businesses and individuals who buy insurance. Republicans are also on record about what we don’t favor – a 1,500-page bill that includes a lot of things Americans didn’t ask for and very little of what they did.” – Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell

BILL WOULD REQUIRE FAMILIES TO PAY UP TO 18% OF INCOME IN HEALTH CARE COSTS

“Under the House bill, the budget office said, a family of four with income of $78,000 in 2016 would pay, on average, an annual premium of $8,800 and co-payments of $5,000, for a total of $13,800, equivalent to 18 percent of the family’s income.”
